Keep cool, baby

Jan 12, 2010

Here’s what you need to know about looking after your little one on those hot summer days.

You'll find this article and much more in the December/January 2009/2010 issue of Mother & Baby magazine – on sale now!

Written by Sara Verge

Feeling hot, hot, hot? Well, if you are, then your baby is too. However, there’s no need to panic at the thought of another sweltering summer approaching. Babies can get stressed by the heat, but coping with summer just means a little extra care and some commonsense to keep both of you cool, comfy and stress-free.

How many layers?
If you’re feeling comfortable in a summer dress or shorts and a singlet top, then don’t bundle up your bub in a long-sleeved grow suit. Parentcraft educator and M&B expert Sharon Donaldson says: "For a newborn baby on a hot day, a singlet and a nappy and a wrap is plenty for them to maintain their body temperature."

If your baby likes being wrapped, make sure you’re using a muslin or light cotton one. When it’s really hot, Sharon advises putting a cloth nappy or small towel over your arm when you’re nursing your baby. This avoids too much sticky skin-to-skin contact and the risk of overheating your baby from your own body heat.

Plenty of fluids
"Babies do dehydrate very quickly,” says Sharon. However, there’s no need to panic, or try to pump bottles of water into your bub in hot weather. If you’ve got a good supply of breastmilk, you don’t need to give water," says Sharon. Instead she recommends short, frequent breastfeeds, as often as every two hours. Make sure your own fluid intake is good too.

As long as your baby has a wee after every feed and is producing six to eight wet nappies a day, there’s nothing to worry about, reassures Sharon.

Spend the hottest part of the day indoors, in the coolest part of the house with a fan going. (Don’t point the fan right at your baby.) If it’s really hot you can put a wet towel in front of the fan to cool the air. If you’ve got air conditioning (lucky you!) watch that the room doesn’t become too cold; 24C–26C is low enough. A tepid bath is another way to keep your baby cool on a very hot day.

Slip, slop, slap
Children’s skin is particularly vulnerable to harmful UV rays. Too much sun when you’re a kid really increases your risk of skin cancer later in life. Cancer Council Australia recommends keeping babies out of the sun as much as possible.

Tips to minimise your baby’s sun exposure:
-Try to organise your day so you can be inside between 10am and 3pm, when UV is most intense.
- Cover as much of your baby’s skin as possible with loose-fitting clothes and wraps. - Protect his face, neck and ears with a broad-brimmed or legionnaire-style hat. - Use a sunshade on your pram or stroller and check regularly to make sure your bub is still in the shade.
- Use a SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen on the parts of his body not covered by clothing – face, ears, hands and feet. The Cancer Council advises there is no evidence that using sunscreen on full-term babies is harmful. (The skin of premature babies may be more permeable because it is not completely developed.) Sunscreens labelled for toddlers and babies contain the same chemicals as ones labelled for adults, but usually have a gentler base and no perfume and so are less likely to irritate a baby’s skin.

Breastfeeding strategy to promote baby health

Nov 13, 2009

Source: Nine MSN - http://news.ninemsn.com.au/health/970582/breastfeeding-strategy-urges-mums-to-ditch-the-bottle

State and Federal governments will today launch a five-year plan to promote breastfeeding as a way to fight obesity and chronic disease.

The Australian National Breastfeeding Strategy will encourage mothers to avoid using the bottle at all for the first six months, in addition to launching a national breast milk bank.

Milk donated from nursing mothers at the bank would be fed to sick or premature babies.

The strategy will also aim to topple the social taboo related to breastfeeding and instead encourage its health benefits.

"The experts all agree that where possible, breast is best for babies and mothers and that every month of breastfeeding is a bonus for babies," South Australia Health Minister John Hill told the Advertiser.

A 2004 study said 92 percent of newborns were breastfed initially but the number had dropped to slightly more than half of babies at the three-month mark.

Breastfeeding has also been shown to reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

Mini-baby boom sends population to 22m

Oct 6, 2009
Erin

UPDATE: Lauren Wilson | October 01, 2009

Article from:  The Australian

AUSTRALIA's population just hit 22 million, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics population clock.

The clock, based on population estimates taken from the Australian Demographic Statistics published in March, ticked over to 22 million at 1.58pm.

The ABS estimates Australia's population is bolstered by one birth every one minute and 44 seconds, and by a net gain of one international migrant every one minute and 53 seconds.

The swelled population estimates have come as a surprise to many who remember former treasurer Peter Costello's 2004 plea for women to go forth and give birth -- "one for mum, one for dad and one for the country."

Just four years ago, it seemed Australia was in the midst of a "baby drought".

Monash University demographer Bob Birrell said there had been a significant surge in the past year, both in the birth rate and in migration levels, "which most demographers have not anticipated".

"The fact that the national birth rate has gone up from 1.7 to 1.9 in the last four years is very significant," Dr Birrell said.

While the Howard government's baby bonus might have had some impact in raising the birth rate, he suggested a more likely explanation was the run of economic prosperity Australia enjoyed until last year's global financial meltdown.

"Until four or five years ago, the economic climate was such that you could not be certain if you could maintain a job or buy a house," he said.

While 249,000 babies were born in 2004, last year the ABS counted 297,000 births -- so significant an increase that Dr Birrell called it a "mini-baby boom". However, given the onset of the global recession, he said "we might struggle to maintain a birthrate of 1.9 now".

Melbourne mother Suzie Nader, 30, was thrilled to give birth to her second child, Noah, three days ago at Melbourne's Royal Women's Hospital.

Like many career women, Ms Nader said she deliberated before having her first child, but decided there was no point delaying her desire to have a family, given "there will never be a perfect time".

She said she had not ruled out having a third child -- "for the country" -- but planned to wait at least seven years before she made that decision.

Even more statistically significant is the rise in overseas migration.

Migration contributed 63per cent of last year's population growth of 2.1 per cent -- the highest growth rate since the 1950s and 60s.

On the other side of Melbourne, at Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula, South African migrants David and Lorraine Colvin are hoping to obtain permanent residency in Australia as soon as possible.

The couple decided to move to Melbourne after they were attacked in their home in South Africa by knife-wielding intruders. Now Mr Colvin has a job with a cable manufacturing company and they enjoy living in a city where they are not in perpetual fear for their safety.

Baby moving to Big Bed

May 18, 2009
Erin

Well it is about time for our 'almost' 2 year old to make the move from the cot to the BIG BED.

We are very aware that he still throws himself around every which way during the night and have concerns of him falling out of bed. The obvious is to purchase a bed that allows for rails to hold him in, but this also limits the choice of style.

I came across a great article filled with information on this topic, which has hopefully made choosing the right bed much easier, but it also assists in when and how to make the change.

Baby gender test in a bottle!

May 11, 2009
Jon Ovington

Boy or Girl Gender Test KitIt is the controversial Gender test kit branded 'a toy'

Expectant parents can now test the sex of their baby in the comfort of their own home as early as eight weeks using  IntelliGender, the first test of its kind in Australia claiming 90% accuracy in determining whether a baby will be a boy or a girl.

It has stirred up much debate on its accuracy, whether it even works at all and the fact it could be result in abortion of unwanted sex babies.

At $95, its accuracy concerns, and with gender selection moral, ethical and legal issues, would an expecting mother not see any logic in waiting for the 12 week ultrasound?

SHOULD D.I.Y. GENDER I.D. TESTS BE AVAILABLE AT PHARMACIES? Have your say below.

Mothers Day 2009

May 7, 2009
Admin

Well Mothers day is nearing, Sunday 10th of May and Daddy is left wondering what on earth to get Mum. Our little man is almost 2 now with plenty to say, but unfortunately offers very little advice, at least I'm certainly not buying a 'Car', 'Boat' or 'Train' as he would suggest (they are his more frequent words).

There is the usual pyjamas, perfume and flowers but as great as those things may be, I hoping to make it a little more exciting. Mum has bought herself, or should I say bought me to give her, Gold class cinema tickets to see a good movie in style, is this enough or does Mum deserve even more for what she does? I'll think about that, maybe you can give me some suggestions?
